Too much molasses in calf starter can interfere with growth rates and feed efficiency. According to a study from the University of Minnesota’s Southern Research and Outreach Center, calves fed a texturized calf starter containing 6 percent molasses had 8.3 percent greater average daily gain than calves fed 12 percent molasses. The calves also utilized their feed 5.3 percent more efficiently than the calves fed 12 percent molasses. Calves fed 9 percent molasses performed similarly to calves fed 6 percent molasses.
