Doc Talk The popular DocTalk show featuring Kansas State University’s Dan Thomson, PhD, DVM, covers the sensitive topic of humane euthanasia of downed animals in this week’s episode.

“Euthanasia is a Latin term meaning ‘good death’,” Thomson explains in the show.

Thomson’s interview with Matt Miesner, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, also of Kansas State University, talks about how to make the decision to humanely euthanize cattle. Thomson and Miesner also discuss acceptable and unacceptable methods of euthanasia of cattle and considerations for carcass disposal.

“When we get to the point where what we are doing is not helping, we have to go in another direction,” Miesner says on DocTalk.

“We in veterinary medicine take an oath for the relief of suffering of animals,” Thomson says. “We all have a responsibility to these animals to treat them humanely, with dignity and relieve the suffering when we can.”
