Demand for replacement heifers slows

Heifer prices at most recent auctions were generally lower than last month. With milk prices moderating from record high levels, demand for replacement heifers has slowed. Top end springing heifer prices peaked at $1,900 in Turlock Calif., last month, but topped out at $1,750 this month in Stratford, Wis. Calf prices were steady to firm with last month. Top end heifer calf prices in Stratford, Wis., jumped to $205 from the high end of the range last month of $180, reports Greg Scheer, dairy analyst with Doane Advisory Services in St. Louis, Mo.
