Heifer prices slip in California, rally in Wisconsin and Texas

At most recent auctions, prices of springing heifers were generally steady with the previous month. However, top-end prices for top quality heifers slipped to $1,725 in Turlock, Calif., down from $1,800 the month prior. Top-end prices in Stratford, Wis. jumped to $1,650 from $1,475 a month ago, and increased from $1,375 to $1,550 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. The high end of dairy calf prices in Stratford, Wis. moved to $175, up from $160 last month. An even bigger jump occurred in Texas, with a high-end calf-price increase to $230, up from $145 last month, reports Greg Scheer, dairy analyst with Doane Advisory Services in St. Louis, Mo.
