When you decide to wean calves, take into consideration the animal’s daily grain intake.

Lance Fox, veterinarian and technical service manager with Alpharma Animal Health, says to use 2 pounds per head per day as the benchmark for daily grain intake. “A calf that is eating 2 pounds of starter per day for several consecutive days is ready for the weaning process,” he says.

But how do you know if the calf is eating 2 pounds per day? “I see very few producers measuring grain,” notes Fox. He recommends measuring the appropriate amount of feed fed daily. Know what 2 pounds looks like and do not put new feed on top of old.
