Move calves on day one

The best day to move newborn calves is day one, says Russell Schnepper, veterinarian with Schnepper International in Platteville, Wis.

A calf has a functioning adrenal gland at birth, which ceases to function at about eight days of age and does not resume activity until approximately day 28. Because of this, during eight to 28 days of age, calves do not handle stress well. Calves also are creatures of habit and do not enjoy change.
