Canola can be used in a crop rotation with peas and fed as silage for lactating dairy cattle in certain regions of the country.

Canola: A crop rotation optionAccording to research reported in the December 2011 Washington State University Dairy Newsletter, the resulting combination was palatable and had an acceptable feeding value as indicated by its chemical composition and in vitro digestibility.

“Ensiling the forage crop and feeding it as part of a TMR avoided potential problems that might occur with direct grazing,” says Ron Kincaid, professor emeritus at Washington State University.

Kincaid says biennial forage canola can be a viable option in crop rotation systems in dry land areas, both to diversify crop production and to obtain forage for ruminants.
