Pack in thin layers

Here’s an easy way to tell if your packing job is keeping up with a fast filling rate.

Monitor how much new, unconsolidated forage is under the packing tractor’s wheels at any one time, advises Rich Lutz, a Pioneer Hi-Bred International livestock account manager based in Harleysville, Pa. Remember, thinner layers of silage result in better-packed silage, so keep the packing-layer thickness to 6 inches or less.
