The classic textbook, “Rumen Microbiology and Its Role in Ruminant Nutrition,” originally published by the late Dr. James B. Russell in 2002, is now available free of charge for noncommercial educational or scientific purposes. The PDF can be downloaded via the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center web site.

Dr. Russell wrote the book “for beginning students or people that simply want an overview” of rumen microbiology, and it was considered by Dr. Russell to be particularly useful for college undergraduates.

Dr. Russell was one of the world’s foremost rumen microbiologists. He was a research scientist for the USDA Agricultural Research Service from 1981 until his death in 2009. Dr. Russell was located at Ithaca, NY and was also affiliated with the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, WI.
