There are many aspects to manage to achieve improved dairy reproductive efficiency, including the nutrition program.

Although the voluntary waiting period (VWP) for first insemination following calving is typically 60 days, nutrition must be on target before and during this time period. That includes the dry period, when cows freshen, and throughout the breeding period.

According to an article at eXtension, energy balance has the greatest nutritional impact on herd reproductive efficiency. The article also looks at fat supplements, protein nutrition, and vitamins and minerals important to reproductive efficiency. It was written by Maurice Eastridge, professor and extension dairy specialist, The Ohio State University.
