Mom wasn’t kidding when she said that breakfast was the most important part of the day. A new study confirms that eating a high-protein breakfast in particular helps stay satisfied longer and resist the urge to snack.

"Eating a protein-rich breakfast impacts the drive to eat later in the day, when people are more likely to consume high-fat or high-sugar snacks," Heather Leidy, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology said. "These data suggest that eating a protein-rich breakfast is one potential strategy to prevent overeating and improve diet quality by replacing unhealthy snacks with high quality breakfast foods."

Considering that up to 60 percent of young adults consistently skip breakfast, Leidy’s study could help push more to eat a protein-packed breakfast to start the day.

Science Daily reports that the study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, tracked 20 overweight or obese young women between the ages of 18 and 20. Leidy and her team found that those who ate a high-protein breakfast were more satisfied and showed decrease brain activity responsible for controlling food cravings.

High-protein breakfasts also helped participants resist evening snacking on high-fat or high-sugar foods more than for those who skipped breakfast or ate a normal-protein cereal breakfast.

Of the many high-protein options available, one of the best is Greek yogurt.  With 15 to 20 grams of protein in a typical 6-ounce serving, U.S. News & World Report made it clear that this popular Mediterranean variety has an edge over regular yogurt.
