Dry cow treatment is the topic of a recent installment of the Purdue Dairy Digest podcast series.

"The dry period, when cows are not milked in the two months before calving, is a time when they are very susceptible to mastitis infections," says Tamilee Nennich, Purdue University Extension dairy specialist. "Intramammary mastitis therapy in cows at dry off, subsequent to the last milking of the lactation, can cure existing infections, as well as prevent new ones."

Nennich goes on to discuss the advantages of dry cow therapy vs. treating cows during lactation, as well as advice on preparing for and administering dry off therapy.
