An air-quality fact sheet entitled “Diet and Feed Management to Mitigate Airborne Emissions” is now available. The 10-page publication was developed by the Air Quality Education in Animal Agriculture project.

The publication discusses how diet and feed management can be used to reduce excess nutrient and gaseous emissions from cattle, poultry and hogs. Topics discussed include:

  • Improving nutrient absorption
  • Feed processing techniques
  • Diet manipulations that can change the physical characteristics of manure
  • Manipulating digestive microbes

“Using a combination of several feed related techniques can reduce ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions by 30-50 percent and odors by 30 percent with little extra cost for the producer,” say the publication’s authors.
