Canola meal gets a good review

“Canola meal has long been considered a second-class protein supplement to soybean meal,” says Kurt Cotanch with the W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute in Chazy, N.Y.

In the latest issue of the Miner Institute Farm Report, Cotanch discusses the results of a scientific review paper that compares the feed value of canola meal and heat-treated canola meal to soybean meal.

The results speak favorably for using canola meal as a protein supplement for dairy cows.

“This paper certainly shows that canola meal may be undervalued compared with soybean meal, especially in grass silage-based rations,” Cotanch says.
