Reproductive protocol proves effective in increasing heifer conception rates

To examine the effectiveness of synchronization protocols in heifers, research at the University of Florida compared the effectiveness of different timed-A.I. protocols in Holstein heifers.

According to the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council’s June newsletter, the study’s objective was to determine if the five day Co-Synch protocol plus the use of a controlled internal drug release insert (Eazi-Breed™ CIDR®) with a dosage of PGF2α at first and second services could be a successful protocol in heifer populations.

The trial included 1,013 Holstein heifers from two dairies in North Central and South Florida. Heifers were divided into four subgroups; each heifer was involved in only one of the four trials.

The overall conclusion from the research was conception rate was higher in heifers where a CIDR device was used. The four individual study designs and results were as follows:

Study 1

Design: Heifers were randomly assigned to receive one (control) or two (treatment) doses of PGF2α in the five day Co-Synch plus CIDR protocol.

Results: No significant difference was recorded in conception rate for control (46.1 percent) versus treatment (48.6 percent) groups.

Study 2

Design: Heifers were randomly assigned to receive one (control) or two (treatment) doses of PGF2α in the five day Co-Synch plus CIDR protocol.

Results: Conception rates were similar between the treatment (52.2 percent) and control (55 percent) group.

Study 3

Design: Non-pregnant heifers were randomly assigned to receive a CIDR (treatment) or no CIDR (control) in the five day Co-Synch protocol for resynchronization of timed A.I.

Results: Conception rate was greater (51.8 percent) in heifers where a CIDR device was used, than without (39.3 percent).

Study 4

Design: In a commercial field evaluation, 416 heifers were synchronized with five day Co-Synch plus CIDR protocol with a dosage of PGF2α for the first service. Heifers open 30 days after breeding were resynchronized using the same protocol.

Results: Conception rate on day 60 was 58.2 percent and 47.5 percent for first and second timed A.I., respectively. Researchers identified a sire effect on the results seen in the second timed A.I.

Researchers also reported the five day Co-Synch plus CIDR protocol with one dose of PGF2α can be an effective reproductive management program for the first and second timed A.I. in dairy heifers.
