Choosing the right protocol can be complicated since the “best” protocol may vary by dairy. Roger Saltman, manager of Pfizer Animal Health’s cattle veterinary operations, told audiences at the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council’s annual meeting last month that the best protocol is one that:

  • Begins with a sound reproductive physiology basis, as well as a good economic basis.
  • Must be a program that can be carried out accurately and repeatedly.
  • May evolve with the capabilities of the dairy.
  • Must be a systematic breeding protocol — that is, a process with defined endpoints for getting animals bred and re-bred. This process should be auditable.
