Resynch protocol offers reproductive opportunities

Resynchronization of open cows is one of the biggest challenges in managing today’s dairy cows, says Todd Bilby, Texas AgriLife Extension dairy specialist.

So researchers and dairy farmers are on the lookout for ways to improve on this reproductive concern.

A recent study in California and Arizona provides a few answers. The researchers examined three resynchronization protocols and found that cows that received an injection of GnRH prior to the start of the resynchronization program had more pregnancies at 90 days after re-insemination compared to cows that received only the resynchronization protocol.

The cows in this treatment group also offered greater economic returns than those that received only the resynchronization protocol.

In addition, the timing works well in that injections occur on the same day of the week — with the exception of the day of timed AI, notes Bilby. “Therefore, this protocol may be an improved alternative to current resynchronization programs.”
