One of the big advantages to genomic testing is that it significantly speeds up genetic progress.

For example, it takes about six years to prove a sire with progeny-testing. However, with the improved accuracy of genomics, A.I. companies have been able to cut that time almost in half.

Some of the new graduates this past January may not have finished the progeny-testing program for another two or three years, says Roy Wilson, vice president, large herd business center, Genex Cooperative Inc. “It’s like getting nine sire summaries in one with no base change.”
