Dairy cattle breeding has changed tremendously during the past century, says Roger Shanks, University of Illinois professor of animal science. So what may be some of the changes during the next 25 years? Keep in mind that 25 years is not much time in terms of generation interval in dairy cattle.

The first question is will dairy remain a viable industry? “Yes,” Shanks says, “if milk can be produced efficiently and dairy products can compete effectively with other foods. In general, cows that produce more milk are more efficient. Genetic progress quantifies change toward more efficient production.”
