No excuses for calf-dumping!
By Dairy Herd news source  |  Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Incidents of calf-dumping seem to be picking up in California with the bad economy.

A particularly egregious case involved nearly three dozen dead dairy calves in eastern San Joaquin County last month. That prompted the animal-advocacy group Farm Sanctuary to offer a $2,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the people who dumped them.

“We were outraged when we found out that someone callously dumped these animals, and we had to do something to stop this from happening to more newborn male calves,” said Russ Mead, general counsel for the group.

“In this case, somebody dumped these calves like somebody would dump an old couch in a ravine in the middle of the night,” he added.

Such incidents seem to increase in tough economic times.
