Long-day lighting enhances heifer growth

Giving heifers 16 to 18 hours of supplemental lighting in a 24-hour periodappears to benefit their performance prior to puberty and later on in their first lactation.
Neil Broadwater, dairy extension educator with the University of Minnesota, discusses lighting recommendations for heifers and the results of several studies that explore the use of long-day lighting for heifers in an online University of Minnesota extension publication.
