It is common to lump all Spanish-speaking employees under the umbrella term “Hispanic.” Hispanic suggests they originate from Spain, says Alvaro Garcia, extension dairy specialist at South Dakota State University. However, many Spanish-speaking employees have no immediate connection to Spain.
The term “Latinos” is more appropriate to use. It describes the Latin origin of the Spanish language, Garcia says. However, if you want to be even more specific, just call employees by their origin. “If they are from Mexico, they are Mexican,” he explains.
Have employees pinpoint their home country on a map. It makes them feel appreciated when you ask where they are originally from. “They are very proud of their heritage,” Garcia says.
