New study: Dairy promotes cardiovascular health

Dairy consumption can promote cardiovascular health by decreasing pulse wave velocity rates, pulse pressure and systolic blood pressure for adults, according to a recent study.

The University of South Australia, Australian National University and the University of Maine conducted the study, which was published in the American Heart Association journal. Findings show that dairy foods reduce arterial stiffness, thereby decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study investigated whether dairy food intake is associated with measures of arterial stiffness, including pulse pressure and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, a noninvasive, gold-standard method for measuring arterial stiffness, reports here. The study showed pulse wave velocity rates declined with increased dairy consumption, ranging from once per week to more than once per day. Participants of the study who consumed dairy products daily or up to six times per week recorded the lowest pulse wave velocity rates.

Researchers analyzed data from close to 600 participants.

To determine if dairy consumption is an appropriate solution for age-related arterial stiffness and cardiovascular disease, more research is needed.
