Setback for ag groups in opposing high-speed rail plan

Ag groups who have opposed a high-speed railroad project across central California got some bad news Friday.

Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Timothy Frawley denied a request for a preliminary injunction, saying that the agency overseeing the project "acted reasonably and in good faith" in trying to comply with California environmental law, according to this story from The Associated Press.

The case is not final, but the judge’s ruling allows planning for the project to continue. Actual construction is scheduled to begin next July.

Groups such as the Madera County Farm Bureau, Merced County Farm Bureau and Preserve Our Heritage sought an injunction to prevent the project from being built. They claimed the rail authority approved the route before fully addressing the environmental impact.

Some farms are in the path of the project. See “High speed train set to derail dairy farm.”

Agriculture has increasingly and correctly become more concerned about its image with consumers. We have spent time and resources training ourselves to communicate the positive attributes of agriculture to the media and consumers. In that light I think those opposing light rail should ask the question: "What image of agriculture does this send to our customers?"

Opposing high speed rail shows that you are intelligent and make decisions based on reason, not emotion and ignorance. High speed rail is a joke. An over priced joke. Americans do not favor riding trains, otherwise Amtrak would make a profit sometimes.
