The producer was able to purchase the hominy at a discount to that of the dry corn. In addition, on a dry matter basis, they were able to replace 0.85 pounds of hominy for every pound of dry corn while maintaining their milk production.
“Because the herd had taken rumen degradable starch into consideration, they were able to make a more informed decision,” says Leahy. This herd saved money and no compromises were made to the nutritional status of the cows or the herd’s milk production.
