South Dakota dairy farmers have rallied together to help their communities by raising money, food and dairy products for families in need.

According to Keloland TV, dairy farmers in Minnehaha County, S.D., organized the weekend donation event to get grocery shoppers to load their carts to help fill local food pantries. Donations went far beyond traditional non-perishable items; they also included fresh dairy products.

Dairy farmers know just how important it is to give fresh dairy products to needy families, especially those with growing children.

“Dairy is probably one of the move healthy foods out there. It has nine essential nutrients that we need in our diets every day,” dairy farmer Doug Ode told Keloland.

A second donation event has been planned for mid-March. Click here to learn more from Keloland.

A news release for Feeding South Dakota  noted that this is the third year that area dairy farm families have partnered with local businesses to raise money and food. Last year, the group raised more than $12,000. Read more.
