Lucas Sjostrom joined Dairy Herd Management as Assistant Editor, effective May 19.

Sjostrom has an extensive and evolving dairy background. He grew up on his family's 100-Holstein, 750-acre dairy farm in southern Minnesota. He now lives near Brooten, Minn., with his wife, Alise, and daughter, Lucy, where they are starting a farmstead cheese plant, Redhead Creamery, on her parents' 200-cow dairy farm.

Prior to joining Dairy Herd Management, Sjostrom worked as a government relations specialist and communications assistant for Holstein Associates USA, and served as an associate editor with Hoard’s Dairyman, with an emphasis on digital content. He is currently wrapping up work as a graduate research assistant with the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, and will present the research at the 2014 ADSA-ASAS-CSAS Joint Annual Meeting, July 24, in Kansas City, Mo.

His experiences have allowed him to visit dairy farms in 31 states, three Canadian provinces, Russia and Brazil.

As Assistant Editor, Sjostrom will work with Dairy Herd Management Editor Dave Natzke and the rest of the staff to provide content for both print and web, and spearhead digital and social media efforts.

“We’re excited to have Lucas join our editorial group,” said Natzke. “I'm confident his experiences and enthusiasm for the dairy industry will help us continue in our ongoing effort to put the ‘producer first’.”

“I am thrilled to be joining a strong communications company in Vance Publishing and working with a nationally respected editor in Dave Natzke,” Sjostrom said. “Living on a dairy farm myself, I will do my best to keep on the pulse of helping dairy farmers improve and sustain their businesses.”

Editorial Director Greg Johnson said this further strengthens the brand in the dairy market.

“We’re proud that Dave and Lucas are bringing their talent, experience and credibility to the dairy market and working with the leaders in the industry on a daily basis,” he said.

Sjostrom will work from his home near Brooten, Minn., in an office uniquely located above the milking parlor, with a window into the freestall barn.
