A West Virginia man faces charges on 16 counts of animal cruelty after he allegedly allowed 16 cows to starve.

The dead animals were found on a farm near Cameron, W.Va.,  belonging to Kevin Strope after a complaint was filed Dec. 31 with Marshall County Animal Control officers, according to a report in The Intelligencer / Wheeling (W. Va.) News-Register.

Sheriff's deputies and animal control officers found 16 dead cows -- which may have been dead for as long as three weeks -- in various states of decomposition at several locations on farm, according to the report, along with 14 live animals in poor condition, which are to be relocated.

A Marshall County Animal Control officer says the animals were beef cows.
