Feed heifers for a smooth transition
By Dairy Herd news staff  |  Sunday, May 10, 2009

Springing heifers have unique nutrient requirements and should be managed accordingly to maximize productivity during their first lactation, says Noah Litherland, University of Minnesota extension dairy nutritionist.

Litherland explained the relationship between energy intake before calving and its impact on lactation performance at the 2009 University of Wisconsin-Extension Dairy Team’s “Raising Quality Dairy Replacements” meeting. He also discussed the feeding behavior of pre-fresh heifers, feeding strategies and forage options to consider during the transition period.

His presentation from the “Raising Quality Dairy Replacements” meeting is now available online. Click here for more details.
