Heifer heat stress studied

Heifers benefit from shade.

According to a study in the February Journal of Dairy Science, giving heifers in dry-lot pens access to shade in hot weather improved their growth and feed efficiency compared to cooling heifers with sprinklers only.

Here is a look at heifer performance during the study:

Average daily gain (pounds) 2.98 2.56
Dry matter intake (pounds) 21.65 20.93
Feed: gain 7.42 8.52
