Selenium and vitamin E benefit calves
By Dairy Herd staff  |  Tuesday, May 01, 2007

Organic Selenium and adequate vitamin E improved pre-weaned calf health, according to research presented at the Midwest regional meeting of the American Dairy Science Association in March.

For instance, calves fed 0.3 parts per million organic selenium and 1,000 IU of vitamin E per day had fewer sick days than calves fed the same amount of inorganic selenium and only 250 IU of vitamin E.

The study, from South Dakota State University, also evaluated the effect of selenium source and vitamin E dosage on calf growth and performance. To see some of those results, follow this link.
