USDA released its monthly Dairy Products report on Dec. 3, summarizing October 2014 production estimates.

• Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 977 million lbs., 2.3% above October 2013 and 3.5% above September 2014.

• Italian type cheese production totaled 421 million lbs., 2.9% above October 2013 and 1.2% above September 2014.

• American type cheese production totaled 383 million lbs., 3.2% above October 2013 and 5.8% above September 2014.

• Butter production was 148 million lbs., 1.5% above October 2013 and 13.8% above September 2014.

• Dry milk powders (comparisons with October 2013): Nonfat dry milk, human - 132 million lbs., up 54.1%; Skim milk powders - 41.1 million lbs., down 34.1%.

• Whey products (comparisons with October 2013): Dry whey, total - 70.6 million lbs., down 1.2%; Lactose, human and animal - 97.2 million lbs., up 9.0%; whey protein concentrate, total - 46.3 million lbs., up 1.7%.

• Frozen products (comparisons with October 2013): Ice cream, regular (hard) - 60.4 million gallons, down 7.5%; Ice cream, lowfat (total) - 30.6 million gallons, up 1.7%; Sherbet (hard) - 3.03 million gallons, down 7.3%; frozen yogurt (total) - 4.66 million gallons, down 17.9%.

HighGround Dairy’s Eric Meyer called the report bearish vs. HighGround’s expectations.

FCStone’s Dave Kurawski called the report bearish for butter, nonfat dry milk and dry whey, but bullish for cheese.
