Cold storage report released
USDA’s monthly Cold Storage report estimated butter stocks totaled 138.2 million lbs. on Oct. 31, down 5% from Sept. 30, and 24% less than Oct. 31, 2013.
Total natural cheese stocks, at 983.8 million lbs., were down 3% from September 2014, and down 4% from October 2013. American cheese, at 612.2 million lbs., was also down 3% from last month, and down 2% from a year earlier.
Dave Kurzawski, FCStone, characterized the report as bearish on butter and neutral on cheese.
Eric Meyer, HighGround Dairy, termed the report neutral vs. HighGround Dairy’s expectations.
Cattle on feed up slightly
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in U.S. feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.6 million head on Nov. 1, slightly more than a year earlier. October placements totaled 2.36 million head (2.26 million net), down 1% from a year earlier. October fed cattle marketings totaled 1.69 million, down 8% from a year ago.
