December dairy CPI summarized

December 2014 retail dairy product prices were mixed compared to November, but all were higher than a year earlier, according to unadjusted monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Overall December 2014 retail dairy product prices were +0.6% compared to November 2014, and +5.3% compared to December 2014. That compares to retail prices for all food eaten at home, which was +0.4% compared to November and +3.7% compared to the year before.

The big news in the monthly CPI report continued to be energy costs. The gasoline index continued to fall sharply, declining 9.4%; the fuel oil index also fell sharply, and the energy index posted its largest one-month decline since December 2008, although the indexes for natural gas and for electricity both increased.
