There are some things we just can’t make up.

According to, William Taylor built the world’s first treadmill on his farm in Northern Ireland. The treadmill spins an axle that in turns spins a gearbox to drive a 2kW generator.

The single-animal prototype can supposedly produce enough power to run four milking machines. Taylor figures if the world’s entire population of cattle – roughly 1.3 billion head – were to walk on these machines for eight hours a day, together they would produce around 6 percent of the world’s power.

The treadmill won’t be in stores any time soon though – Taylor’s prototype made its public debut in 2010 with little movement since.
