Weekly dairy cow slaughter under federal inspection

With estimates for the week ending Feb. 7, it marked the first time dairy cow culling topped 62,000 for five consecutive weeks since March-April 2013.

Week ending Feb. 7: 62,800 head

Year-to-date (YTD) 2015: 371,200 head

YTD compared to same period 2014: +17,500 head

Weekly regional highlights: Across major dairy regions of the country, 18% of total dairy cows culled came from Zone 3 (DE, MD, PA, VA & WV); 23% came from USDA Zone 5 (IL, IN, MI, MN, OH & WI); 30% came from USDA Zone 9 (AZ, CA, HI & NV).

January culling totals

U.S. dairy cows culled for slaughter in January 2015 were estimated at 275,400 head, 5,200 more than January 2014, and 18,600 more than December 2014, according to USDA’s latest Livestock Slaughter report.

Across major dairy regions of the country, 16% of total dairy cows culled came from Zone 3 (DE, MD, PA, VA & WV); 24% came from USDA Zone 5 (IL, IN, MI, MN, OH & WI); 29% came from USDA Zone 9 (AZ, CA, HI & NV).

January 2015 contained 22 weekdays (including 2 holiday) and 5 Saturdays. January 2014 contained 23 weekdays (including 2 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.

Dairy replacement sales results from Jerome, Idaho, on Feb. 18:

Springers (top 100): 1850 with top of 2150

New Holland Sales Stables

Dairy replacement sales results from New Holland, Pa. on Feb. 18. Compared to previous sale, replacement cows sold mostly 100-200 lower. Demand was moderate. Replacement heifers sold mostly 100-200 higher. Demand was good. 170 head sold. All sales on a per-head basis, Holsteins unless otherwise noted.
