Idaho nutrient management conference meets next month

University of Idaho extension will host the 2010 Nutrient Management Conference March 9 at the Lincoln County Community Center in Shoshone, Idaho.
“This is an opportunity for researchers, crop advisors, dairy producers, growers and government agency representatives to identify cost-effective nutrient-management practices that optimize yields and protect the environment,” says Amber Moore, University of Idaho extension soil specialist and conference coordinator.
Researchers from the University of Idaho, USDA Agricultural Research Service and BYU-Idaho will discuss their recent findings, and speakers from state and federal natural resources and regulatory agencies will provide updates — particularly on regulatory changes that could affect the future of nutrient management in Idaho, Moore notes.
Topics include:
- Biological treatment and conversion of manure.
- Ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions from southern Idaho dairies.
- Manure application management.
- Dairy compost utilization in cropping systems.
- Phosphorus uptake by southern Idaho silage corn.
- In-season nitrogen and phosphorus availability from fall compost application in spring wheat.
- Copper sequestration using local waste products.
- Winter and early spring land applications of lagoon water.
- Evaluation of strip tillage and nutrient placement in southern Idaho corn production.
- Effects of humic substances on fertilizer use efficiency.
- Soil testing on irrigated pastures.
- Slow release nitrogen source and timing for irrigated winter wheat.
- Tillage method and tillage timing of barley residues on nitrogen mineralization.
The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee of $35 includes lunch, snacks and proceedings booklet. This price is good until Feb. 24; it rises to $45 after that date. Certified Crop Adviser credits will be offered.
