Sluggish harvest under way

Weather conditions continue to confound the corn harvest. Analysts estimate that this year’s harvest is the slowest since 1984.
“We are seeing a near record slow pace for harvest,” says Marty Foreman, economist with Doane. “If we can crank up harvest now, we may stay in the $3.50 per bushel range for corn. If weather problems persist prices may get back up to the $4.10 to $4.15 per bushel area.” Foreman predicts final harvest figures will not be available until after Jan. 1.
Nationally, 25 percent of corn crop is harvested, compared with 71 percent for the five-year average.
