Little stimulation for dairy
By Dairy Herd news source  |  Tuesday, March 10, 2009

If you’re looking to the recently passed federal stimulus package for a dairy bailout, don’t.

While there are a few programs that will impact agriculture, like an updated computer billing system for Farm Service Agency offices and $173 million set aside for loans to help beginning farmers or socially disadvantaged producers purchase staples like grain and essential equipment, Sandy Buxton, Cornell University extension business educator, tells the Glens Falls, N.Y. Post-Star that stimulus funds for agriculture are a drop in the bucket.

Instead, producers are looking to existing government programs like the Milk Income Loss Contract to help get through these rough times. Agriculture officials also hope there will be some aid for dairy producers in a new budget bill being debated in Congress.

Meanwhile, producers are urged to communicate with state legislators and let them know about the economic problems on-farm.
