Product Description: The Prospective program is a semen profit comparison tool created to help dairies develop effective strategic breeding programs. It is an unbiased model for use by producers that reports the return on investment for a particular sexed semen product in comparison to conventional semen. The program is Microsoft Excel based. It uses a dairy’s basic inputs to calculate how different semen product choices may impact the dairy’s profits. These basic inputs include items such as conception rates, heifer ratios, expected calf values, number of semen units purchased and cost per unit for each semen product. In addition, the Prospective program enables a producer to compare the return on investment of different semen products used on either cows or heifers. The cow and heifer sections can each be printed as a simple, one-page summarized report that shows the dollars lost or gained from a particular sexed semen choice in comparison to conventional semen. For cows, the value is calculated as: Difference in Asset (Calf) Value + Difference in Semen Cost + Cost of Added Days Open = Total Profit/Loss of using a sexed semen product versus conventional. With heifers, the same formula is used except it also includes a value for additional milk income associated with heifers birthing heifer calves. Furthermore, the Prospective program calculates the estimated days open cost based on the chosen breeding strategy (using a sexed semen product on first service, first two services or all services). This free service can be used by any size dairy. The Prospective program is a value-added tool provided by GENEX to assist producers in making profitable decisions regarding their semen purchases.
