Digital dermatitis, also known as hairy heel wart, is a big problem on many dairy farms.

As a nutritionist, you can help fight this with an integrated approach that includes good nutrition.

In a recent webinar, nutritionist Mike Socha of the Zinpro Corporation explained the role of nutrition, including the use of trace minerals to improve skin integrity and boost immune function.

Among the trace minerals cited:

  • Manganese. It has a role as an antioxidant, as well as being involved in the immune cells’ ability to kill pathogens once they have engulfed them.
  • Copper. It is required for the development of antibodies and increases the effectiveness of immune cells.
  • Zinc. It plays a very important role in helping to maintain skin integrity, serves as an antioxidant, and regulates the activity of immune cells.
  • Iodine. It enhances the killing ability of immune cells. A deficiency of iodine increases the incidence of foot rot.
