MUN could serve as financial incentive

The correlation between milk urea nitrogen and reduced ammonia emissions from cows is strong enough that the dairy industry may want to consider offering financial incentives for milk shipped with the desired range of MUN values.

“This would be a relatively simple way to move the industry in a positive direction toward abatement of (ammonia) emissions and environmental enhancement,” say researchers from the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the September issue of the Journal of Dairy Science.
