California, has announced a new package that will allow nutritionists to monitor starch digestibility in their client herds.
For the Total Starch Digestibility Suite, nutritionists will send one total-mixed ration sample and one fecal sample to Rock River Laboratory for analysis. In turn, nutritionists will receive two analysis reports: one Forage-Based TMR and one Apparent Total Tract Starch Digestibility (which includes fecal starch). "We're offering this package as an alternative to the seven-hour in vitro starch digestibility test," said Zachery Meyer, senior client operations and new business manager for Rock River Lab. "The combination of these two analyses will allow the nutritionist to determine a customized starch digestibility from TMR to feces on their dairy herds, as well as providing a complete analysis of the TMR being fed."
There are two Starch Suite packages available:
NIR Starch Suite: NIR Forage-Based TMR Analysis (moisture, protein, ADF-ICP, NDF-ICP, ADF, NDF, NRC 2001 energy calculations, fat, ash, lignin, soluble protein, sugar and starch) + Total Tract Starch Digestibility (fecal starch, pH and Apparent Total Tract Starch Digestibility - PSU Calculation)— $35
Wet Chemical Starch Suite: Wet Chemical Forage-Based TMR (moisture, protein, ADF, NDF, NRC 2001 energy calculations, Ca, P, K, Mg, S, sugar and starch) + Total Tract Starch Digestibility (fecal starch, pH and Apparent Total Tract Starch Digestibility - PSU Calculation)— $53
* Rock River Laboratory provides free fecal-analysis containers.
