A device about the size of an electronic key fob, paired with a smart phone, will allow livestock producers and consultants to conduct real-time on-farm feed analysis
Chr. Hansen, a global bioscience company that develops natural ingredients for agriculture, has partnered with Consumer Physics to distribute SCiO™ devices, first to Chr. Hansen account managers and distributors and then to customers. The device, which incorporates a compact near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer, instantly measures forage moisture, dry matter, protein, energy, fat and more, potentially helping livestock operations adjust, mix, and feed rations more accurately and efficiently.
“Our partnership with Consumer Physics enables us to equip our key account managers and consultants with the latest technology available for animal feed analysis, says Steve Lerner, VP, North America Sales and Marketing at Chr. Hansen Animal Health and Nutrition. “With SCiO, we can now instantly fine-tune formulation, and proactively detect inconsistencies, in a matter of seconds. It is an important technology addition to our toolkit, in our continuous pursuit for service excellence, which we also plan to roll out to all our customer base,”
Chr. Hansen’s field teams and their customers will use SCiOs during farm visits to troubleshoot animal feed variations, adjust rations, track dry matter and monitor trends to avoid unexpected reductions in milk yield due to feed inconsistencies.
“Our partnership with Chr. Hansen follows a number of recent partnerships we’ve secured with leading animal feed companies,” says Damian Goldring, CTO and Co-Founder, Consumer Physics. “We are excited to see how our recent partnerships in the animal feed industry are helping feed the world. We are also seeing a good fit in adjacent industries, such as dairy, grains and others, for which we hope to have more exciting news in the weeks and months to come.”
