Dairy Replacement Values Remain Frozen

Like the weather in most parts of the country, January replacement heifer and calf prices remained in the deep freeze for the month. Holstein springer prices hovered around the $800 mark on average nationwide, but did reach or surpass $1,000 per head on the top end in three of four reported markets. That’s about 30% less than one year ago this month, and 40% lower than two years ago. A new low of $400 per head for medium-quality springers was recorded in Pennsylvania. Holstein heifer calf values also remain stuck in the cellar, at no more than $75, and as low as $25, per head.
