Raise a glass because National Milk Day is just around the corner with the yearly celebration of milk coming on Friday, Jan. 11, this year.
According to the website National Day Calendar, National Milk Day was proposed by the International Association of Milk Inspectors who requested a resolution by Congress in 1915 to observe the day. However, no date was suggested in the request and it was never formally recognized.
The date of January 11 is believed to be when deliveries of milk in sterilized glass bottles began back in 1978, says the National Milk Producers Federation.
Several sellers of milk are sharing promotions on social media in the run up to National Milk Day, including the world’s largest fast food company and a 10,000 cow dairy. Subway is donating funding to a major hunger relief program through a partnership with dairy farm and processor, Shamrock Farms.
Both companies have committed to donating $1 to Feeding America for every Shamrock Farms milk purchased with a Subway Fresh Fit For Kids meal. The offer is valid at participating Subway restaurants in the U.S. during National Milk Day on Jan. 11, 2019.
“Right now, one in six kids in America faces hunger or is food insecure,” says Leighton Meester, actress and member of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council. “This cause is personally important to me, so I feel very fortunate and proud to be a part of a campaign that is going to make such a positive impact for families in need.”
The initiative is also helping shed light on the importance of milk the diet of children because milk is an excellent source of protein, calcium and Vitamin D.
“Shamrock is excited to partner with Subway restaurants to further our shared mission of hunger relief,” says Ann Ocaña, chief marketing officer for Shamrock Farms. “Milk provides essential nutrients for growing children. National Milk Day is a great opportunity to join forces for good and help fuel families in need in the New Year.”
Additionally, milk is one of the most requested items at food banks. Each $1 donated to Feeding America aids in providing at least 10 meals to help fight hunger across the U.S.
