USDA: Cheese and Butter Production Continues to Climb

In the latest dairy products report from U.S. Department of Agriculture both cheese and butter saw month-over-month and year-over-year gains in production.

Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 1.07 billion pounds, 1.7 percent above October 2016 and 5.2 percent above September 2017. Italian type cheese production totaled 455 million pounds, 1.8 percent above October 2016 and 5.0 percent above September 2017.

American type cheese production totaled 418 million pounds, 4.0 percent above October 2016 and 6.0 percent above September 2017.

Butter production was 143 million pounds, 2.6 percent above October 2016 and 6.8 percent above September 2017.

Dry milk products (comparisons with October 2016)

  • Nonfat dry milk, human - 149 million pounds, up 6.5 percent.
  • Skim milk powder - 23.8 million pounds, down 42.5 percent.

Whey products (comparisons with October 2016)

  • Dry whey, total - 80.7 million pounds, down 3.8 percent.
  • Lactose, human and animal - 93.5 million pounds, up 4.1 percent.
  • Whey protein concentrate, total - 40.9 million pounds, up 7.5 percent.

Frozen products (comparisons with October 2016)

  • Ice cream, regular (hard) - 58.4 million gallons, down 2.5 percent.
  • Ice cream, lowfat (total) - 31.7 million gallons, down 2.0 percent.
  • Sherbet (hard) - 2.29 million gallons, down 11.3 percent.
  • Frozen yogurt (total) - 4.56 million gallons, up 0.1 percent.
