Working to be “smarter not sweeter,” Yoplait recently released a new yogurt utilizing ultra-filtered milk as the main ingredient. With 40% less sugar than the leading greek low-fat yogurt brand and containing 15 grams of protein, Yoplait’s new product, YQ, comes as a result of the company’s “Simply Better” movement.
YQ utilizes a specialized filtration process where 99% of the milk’s lactose is removed. The ultra-filtered milk is then combined with active cultures to eliminate even more of the milk’s lactose.
“Through our use of simple ingredients, ultra-filtered milk and active cultures, we’ve created a protein-packed, less sweet flavor profile with a thick, smooth, extra creamy texture,” said Doug Martin, vice president of marketing for Yoplait USA. “It’s unlike anything that exists in the yogurt aisle today.”
Seven of the eight YQ flavors contain only 9 grams of sugar paired with 15 grams of protein. With 17 grams of protein, the company’s plain variety only has 1 gram of sugar, less than ¼ of a teaspoon.
Using similar techniques, Fairlife, a popular ultra-filtered milk product, was one of the first dairy products to use this filtration technology.
