June Milk Up 1.5%
The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that June milk production was up 1.5% over June 2012. For the first six months of the year, 2013 production lags 2012 by 98 million lb., or less than one-tenth of one percent.
Of the top 23 states, only California (-0.8%) and Missouri (-4.2%) reported less production in June than a year ago. California production is down 634 million lb. through the first six months of 2013, a 2.9% decrease over 2012.
Kansas showed the largest percentage increase, up 9.4%. Indiana was up 5.8%. Of the other top dairy states, Wisconsin was up 1.8%; Idaho, same as last year; New York, 3.9%, Pennsylvania, 2.4%, and Texas, 1.9%.
Once again, USDA did not report cow numbers or milk per cow estimates since the Federal budget sequestration eliminated individual farm surveys through the end of the fiscal year, which ends September 30.
