Who Voted For/Against Farm Bill

The U.S. House of Representatives has posted the roll call votes on last Thursday’s farm bill, with 195 voting for, 234 voting against and 6 not voting.

One hundred seventy one Republicans and 24 Democrats voted for the bill. In contrast, 172 Democrats and 62 Republicans voted against it.

The Republicans blamed the Democrats for the farm bill’s demise, saying the Democrats had promised to deliver 40 votes in favor. Even if they had, however, the bill would have still been defeated 211-218. The Democrats, of course, blamed the Republicans for the bill’s demise, saying the $20 billion in food stamp cuts were too big to swallow.

The Goodlatte/Scott amendment, which removed the market stabilization portion of the dairy title, overwhelmingly passed, 291-135. Even so, the architects of that amendment, Robert Goodlatte, R., Va., and David Scott, D., Ga., voted against the entire bill when it was finally brought to the floor.

It is still unclear where the farm bill goes from here. Any attempt to bring the Senate version of the bill to the House will be fraught with the same issues that brought down the House version: If Speaker John Boehner increases food stamp cuts in the Senate version, he’ll lose Democratic support. If he eliminates or reduce those cuts, he’ll lose his own party’s support.
